The Ataris are a rock band hailing from Anderson, Indiana. They have released five studio albums, and their most recent, Welcome the Night, was released on February 20, 2007. They have a new 7″ EP that will be released on July 6, on Gainesville, Florida based label, Paper + Plastick. They are currently writing and recording songs for their forthcoming album The Graveyard of the Atlantic, which the band has stated will be released in 2011.

Meet Baker, a 30 years old creative director. He works at Acme Corp where his main responsibility is to direct a team of creatives to deliver an output in a manner given by the art director.

During his spare time, he enjoys watching movies (old movies in particular). Among the titles that he owned were One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Shawshank Redemption and Cinema Paradiso. Other than movies, he also enjoy listening to an array of musical genre (Britpop, alternative rock, jazz and sometimes classical). His playlist consist of bands mainly from UK like Coldplay, Radiohead and Portishead.

He had a deep interest in arts, specifically in typography, grids and infographics. Over the year, he develop a favors over a well kerned fonts and logos. Which leads him to his reading material that varies from magazine like Monocle and Newwork, to newspaper like New York Times and the Guardian.

Like his movies, he loves a vintage stuff and leather. His favorite color is black.

What is a Persona?

Persona is a realistic personalities that represent one of the possible theme user. By creating a persona, we’re actually laying a groundwork and the whole story first, about a person that is going to use the theme.

Persona building is one of 2 planning phase that we went through before we starts with the development. Another would be prototyping (information architecture and interactive prototype), but we’ll elaborate on it later.

How does Persona helps in WordPress theme development?

Help us to build the right theme
By creating the persona, we’re actually creates one of many potential users of the theme and tone it down to one. This will avoid us from mistakenly build a theme for another type of person or maybe for ourselves.
Highlight the function/feature that the theme have.
For example, we have a transparent feature on Fable. To demonstrate this, we’re using a background that consist of typography arts (to portray the persona interest) and set the container transparency so that user can view the background image. Therefore, viewer will notice the transparent function, and the persona interest at the same time.
Defining the hierarchy of the website, clearly.
For example, Fable lifestream was used to list out things that the persona wants to highlight. Same with second point. viewers will notice the use and hierarchy of lifestream and also the persona’s highlights selection.
Ease things up.
Isn’t is easier to develop anything (theme in this case) when you have a, story? ツ

Summary

There are myriads of ways to develop a WordPress theme. One can jump to development stage right away without proper planning (persona development, information architecture and such) or vice versa.

As for us,we think that it is crucial and important to take time to plan. It may consume extra time but it’ll definitely brings an advantage in the long run. If it’s done properly, it’ll even cut the development time. Furthermore, it also show the signs of experience and professionalism.

We believe that our users want a value on every penny spent on our themes. We also believe that they’ll appreciate it if we put extra effort and take time to deliver a theme that will satisfy them at the end of the day.

COFFEE COMMON: The Collaborative Brand Wakes Up

A couple weeks ago we announced our plans to create COMMON. Holy hell it’s been a ride since then. We describe COMMON as one part community: one part business prototyper; and one part collaborative brand. And it’s turning out to be one part giant lump in the throat.

We’re a tiny operation and it’s a tall order to build our dream. Dream = A network of creative people rapidly prototyping hundreds, if not thousands of progressive businesses designed to solve social problems, all connected to a brand that’s community designed, community owned and community directed.

It’s roller coaster ride with ups and downs of emotion and energy. But one of the things that keeps us going are all the people that are reaching out to offer help and encouragement. This week Stephen Morrissey from Intelligentsia Coffee skyped me up to talk about coffee and collaboration. Stephen has somehow become my guardian angel in my own journey into what some people describe as the third wave of coffee in the US. The first wave was post first world war. The second wave is our introduction to espresso through Starbucks and the like. And the third wave is what we’re discovering about pour-over coffees and single source beans from people like Stephen and companies like Intelligentsia, Counter Culture, Stumptown, Square Mile, and more.

Stephen was the World Barista Champion in 2008, so I couldn’t ask for a better teacher. Although he surely has had better students as some of you might even pick up from my description of the third wave. I’m a newbie indeed.

To get the word out about the simple truths of great coffee, a group of companies that by most traditional definitions would be considered competitors have decided to band together and work for a greater cause. Damn, I’ve said it before but collaboration is the new competition, and this is a great example if there ever was one. So Stephen was wondering if this sort of collaborative experiment fit what we were doing with the COMMON brand.

Figures it would take a coffee guy to wake us up to the full potential of our collaborative brand concept. It wasn’t the kind of engagement we’d ever considered before. But as we played it out it seemed to fit under the idea of a branded event that could over time become something much more. We’ve been so focused (blinded) on entrepreneurs that we may have missed a big idea that Stephen saw. Thank goodness for people that shake you out of your preconceived notions. So could COMMON brand a movement? Why not? Could COMMON brand a benefit concert? Absolutely!

In a few short days Stephen, Brian Jones (a Project M designer with a coffee blog,Dear Coffee, I Love You), Sean Bonner, Jeff Oeth and others put together a plan to brand this sweet collaboration of some of the country’s top roasters and baristas. These baristas include several national champions and a world champion and they’re paying their way to be part of waking the TED attendees up to coffee. The most complex and nuanced beverage on earth. Sorry wine. The Alabamboo Bike Story – Pt. I

In 2009, inspired by the bike culture in Copenhagen and Amsterdam, a small group of young designers in my program called Project M conceived and launched a new bicycle collective called Nada Bike. Nada is a community of people who believe that sometimes simple is best and that “less is more.” Less cars, less gas, less smog, less paint, less gears, less lycra, less fat. More independence, more health, more freedom, more sustainability, more DIY, more fun.

For $100 (plus shipping) you got a membership card that looked remarkably like the world’s simplest bike frame. Because that’s what it was. An unpainted fixed-gear or single-speed bike frame. You build it up the way you want. With parts you have in the garage or from a garage sale. Or fancy ones you buy. No logo, no marketing, no profit. Just a simple “Do It Yourself” bike for a community of people with a common set of values and interests.

We ordered an initial shipment of 120 steel frames, made in Taiwan, set up a website and launched Nada Bike. Bike Snob NYC did us a favor by posting “worst bike site ever” and members started signing up, quickly depleting our supply of steel frames. Luckily, right before we re-ordered more steel frames we connected with Marty Odlin, one of the founders of Bamboo Bike Studio in Brooklyn. BBS was running workshops teaching people about sustainability while building their own bamboo bike in a weekend. Inspired and helped by Marty, we switched our focus from steel shipped from Taiwan to bamboo grown and fabricated into bike frames in Greensboro, Alabama, where we have a Project M Lab.

The Black Belt of Alabama happens to have ideal conditions for growing bamboo. In fact, we were able to harvest enough to build our initial prototypes from wild forests nearby. We learned that bamboo is a miracle plant that grows very quickly without pesticides, water or re-planting. It also yields the largest biomass per acre and has the most carbon sequestration while growing. We’ve been told that the US is the largest importer of bamboo in the world, mostly from China, and grows hardly any.

Fatefully, we then met a terrific woman named Marsha Folsom, wife of then Alabama Lt. Governor, Jim Folsom. Marsha was heading up an initiative to get bamboo grown as an agricultural crop in Alabama in partnership with Jackie Heinricher from Booshoot. Booshoot is a company based in Washington that has developed technology to produce bamboo tissue culture for growing bamboo, since it’s impossible to grow from seed. We branded this initiative “Alabamboo” hoping to make Alabama mean bamboo like Florida means oranges, Idaho means potatoes or Maine means lobsters.

It’s been fascinating watching things organically present themselves and align around an authentic desire to do meaningful things that help shape a positive future. The latest addition is a cross-country Alabamboo bike adventure this summer. Stay tuned.
